athlete and pioneer of sports footwear.
In the mid-1940s, a young Francesc Mates, athlete and shoemaker’s apprentice, began to design his first competition prototypes with scraps and leftovers from the shoe workshop where he worked.
The advanced technical innovations proposed by the young man attracted attention in the competitions where he participated. The orders of other athletes and coaches began to grow rapidly, leading to the creation of MaTeS in 1947. Francesc Mates was only 17 years old.
During the decades of the 50s, 60s and 70s, MaTeS positioned itself as one of the most valued sport shoe manufacturers and appreciated by elite athletes, who found in those shoes the perfect allies to improve their performance.
The emblematic MaTeS workshop became the meeting point for the most relevant athletes of the moment, attracted by the technical solutions proposed by the experienced Francesc Mates, a benchmark in the manufacture of custom-made footwear and high performance. The relationship with top-level athletes allowed to constantly improve their shoes in each of the sports disciplines.
Francesc Mates’ passion for sports, together with his outstanding involvement in the organization of sporting events, led him to be a founding partner of the Marathon Catalunya Commission and introducer of orientation careers. In addition, it created in 1981 La Cursa de l’Amistat (The Race of Friendship), today considered the best long distance race in Barcelona, recognized for its demanding and mythical route between the mountains of Montjuic and Tibidabo.
